This is a cool site. I stumbled across it looking for info on different music licensing opportunities and companies. Lots of good info, with lots of good links.

The Music Snob is now introducing meta-reviews to this fine cyberworld. While some of you may have an idea of what this is, and it may in fact exist in many locations elsewhere, I can’t be bothered to seek out and destroy these other locations, or even inquire as to their existence, and so, according to this blog, TheMusicSnob.com is now premiering the “meta music review”.

What is a meta music review?

A commentator’s review of a musician’s commentary on his own music.

*Note: they can also be a musician’s review of a commentator’s review of his music. But we will be focusing largely on the former for now.

Why are meta music reviews worthwhile?

• Meta reviews depend on musicians to think and evaluate their own music, and communicate something about it with words
• Having musicians review their own music will foster creative and musical dialog
• Meta reviews will bring humor and insight to the creative process
• Meta reviews will force us to discover some new music and consider new creative ideas and perspectives

Whoohoo!

That was a cool observation.

Having taught at a Music Tech school, students would often ask about the tape vs. digital thing. The topic can be very virulent !!! LOL.

I’d explain that you could get a bunch of that tape sound by being aware of what tape’s limitations were, such as, noise, frequency response, analog circuitries inherent compression and distortion of signal, etc.

Things for them to try, in Pro Tools, could be AnalogChannel 1 & 2 from McDSP. Sweet !!!.

So yeah, I agree. Noise rocks !!!

Pro Tools Structure and Native Instruments Kore Player

Structure is freaking amazing !!! The more I dig into it, the more it does.

I've loaded my EXS Libraries into it, which had come from my previous Akai, EMU, EXS, etc. samplers. It's really cool to be able to do all the processing in the box as opposed to the old days of routing to physical outputs to be routed to the counsole, etc.

I tracked the guitars thru my Boss and Dunlop pedal board. I then applied Digidesign's Eleven plugin to the raw tracks using Audio Suite.

MainStage

Hello All,

I'm using MainStage with a MOTU 828 for a guitar rig. This has more or less (mostly more. LOL) replaced my old ART Rig which was replaced by my POD PRO Rig.

With MainStage on my laptop, I can configure all kinds of guitar patches. I also have some keyboard patches in there too.

I don't use amps unless it's live. Then, I prefer a Roland JC120 with a Marshall 1960A wired in stereo with my processors feeding the power amp inputs on the JC which then power the 1960A.

On the back of the 828 is a footswitch input. This input can execute keycommands, when closing and opening the switch. I have it execute an arrow down, which pages through MainStage patches. I do not use the up.

I only use a few patches and this works nicely for me.

I run the guitar into a pedal board with Dunlop and Boss pedals into the Mic/Line Input One on the 828. The pedal board has Boss Compressor, Turbo Overdrive, Graphic EQ (for solo boosts), Phaser, Flanger, Chorus and TU12 Tuner. Also a modified Dunlop Dimebag Wah and Volume pedal (for swells and tuning).

Sometimes I use my regular Dunlop Wah, a BOSS DS1 Distortion and TU2 Tuner also

It's pretty gnarly.

EQ'ing

Hey All,

I just listened to and threw my 2 cents up on a couple of mixes over at GearSlutz (Cool site):

One thing I noticed on some of the mixes was funky EQ'ing, by that I mean too much boost not enough cut.

One of the gnarly ways to get your mix kickin' is to use high and low pass filters to remove frequencies that are not neccesary for the mix to tell the story.
